Praying for Yourself

Dear Friends:

As devout Christians, we spend a lot of time praying for others and, most recently, worrying about the sliding economy and down markets. While we may pray for others with a joyful heart and “worry” with a sense of hope for the future, it can be exhausting! Have you ever stopped for a moment and prayed for yourself?

Centering yourself back in God’s messages of comfort, guidance and security can have a truly rejuvenating effect that strengthens you for the day’s challenges and for the journey in the day’s to come. It helps you become a better advisor for your clients, and be a better spouse, parent and friend because God’s word fortifies you to your very core, and it is reflected in all that you do.

Many of us spend time each day reading and studying the Bible, striving to understand and embrace the fullness of God’s love for us and His calling on our lives to serve others. That is indeed valuable time spent. I encourage you to go one step deeper and realize that it’s OK to pray for yourself, too. Ask for God’s wisdom and blessings to fill your spirit, just as you ask Him to fill others’ spirits. God’s word is there to guide each one of us in our attitudes and our behaviors.

Personally, I found that Romans 12 was particularly meaningful for me. I’m sure that it “jumped out” at me as God’s way of telling me that I needed to pray for His support in resisting temptation to act in ways I shouldn’t, and in improving myself in many of the areas the chapter details. You may find another chapter or passage that hits home for you, like a beam of light illuminating the way to embrace a characteristic in yourself that you feel isn’t fully developed. Maybe you wish you had more patience with procrastinating clients. Maybe you want to be a more effective communicator when sharing God’s word. Perhaps you feel like you could be more consistently loving toward those who are sometimes not so lovable. Or you might want to forgive someone who hurt you in the past, but don’t know how.

Remember that whatever needs you have, whatever you feel you may be lacking, God wants to fulfill your need and get rid your deficiency. He wants to give all His blessings to you, too! Be faithful in your study of the Bible and without doubt, you will find the scripture that feels just right for you to pray back to God, in the spirit of bettering yourself.

I’d love to learn the Bible passages that are influencing and impacting Kingdom Advisors’ lives. Share your story below and inspire others.

Blessings,

Ron

After reading Romans 12 with the question "Why should I pray for myself more?" in mind, my feelings have shifted from being slightly self serving to that of seeking improvement so I may better serve the other members of the body. Romans 12 14-21 remind me of how short I fall and that I desperately need His blessings. Thanks Ron, for taking me to His word.
