He's God and I'm Not

Dear Friends,

There really is more to this life than what pop culture tells us. It’s not about selfishly having what we want, amassing more possessions or simply rising to the top of our profession. That’s self-centeredness, self-preservation and self-promotion. It’s time to recognize that life doesn’t revolve around us, it revolves around God. I think that in light of our world’s troubling times, more and more mature Christians and those who have newly adopted their faith are embracing this eternal truth. They realize that selfishness, greed and worshipping false idols (especially money) are major reasons for why we are in the state we are in.

Once we discover the truth that in serving God we find fulfillment, meaning, joy, peace, and all the other things we seek in life, it’s a “no-brainer” to live a God-centered life and fulfill our role to reflect Him in all we do. Re-read some of my other recent messages, reflections and suggestions on how we can proclaim His glory in our thought lives and our behaviors.

Now, none of this is to say that we are insignificant. We are quite the opposite in God’s eyes! When you realize that you are dependent on God (and not the other way around), you want to do all you can to glorify Him, and He wants to do all He can to rain His blessings down upon you. We were created to glorify, trust and obey God, so when we accept Him into our hearts and our minds He raises us up beyond anything we can possibly imagine.

How does this relate to the life and practice of a Christian financial advisor? It goes back to helping people achieve true financial freedom. Guiding clients to the understanding that they are stewards of God’s resources frees them from the pressure to constantly earn more or spend more on earthly possessions. It’s like a light bulb that suddenly burns brightly on the truth that they can use their accumulated wealth to glorify God. Scripture tells us in Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” When we worship money, we are living a self-centered life, not a God-centered life. Later in this same passage, Jesus reminds us that God is in control and we are not. Wow, that’s humbling, freeing and uplifting!

I recommend that you pick up Max Lucado’s small, easy-to-read and enlightening book, It’s Not About Me. Read it thoroughly and share it with others including your clients. Then let us know on this site how it impacted your financial and life counsel and transformed the lives of those within your sphere of influence.

Blessings,

Ron
